The Gary Rom experience has been developed over a career spanning more than 3 decades. Gary was first exposed to the hair industry when he joined L’Oréal as a sales consultant in 1984. Once he had won salesman of the year in 1985, he decided to pursue a career in hairdressing.
Gary went to London and Paris, and trained at some prestigious hair academies, namely Jingles, Sanrizz and Tony and Guy, to name a few. When Gary returned, he worked as a stylist with his step father, Kelly Manson.
After 2 years Gary decided to go on his own, and opened his first salon which he named Inter Hair Design, which he successfully ran for 3 years, before opening a second salon with the same name. During his ‘formative’ years, Gary studied the industry, and set about creating a salon experience that was based on all of the service touchpoints that other salons did not cater for. Gary Rom has become synonymous with incredible service delivery, unique points of difference and a client consultation approach that is the benchmark in the industry.
In 2003 Gary re branded and the Gary Rom brand was born.
Some milestones in Gary’s career are as follows:
- First salon in the world to be awarded an ISO 9002 listing in 1999.
- First salon in the Southern Hemisphere to open a prestigious Kerastase signature salon in 2003.
- First salon to launch dedicated sound proof treatment rooms.
- Launched a training concept together with L’Oréal called XMC, and trained upwards of 700 stylists in SA with this system.
- Gary was invited to join the L’Oréal world business team in 2008, and has travelled to many countries to teach and train the industry on the Gary Rom experience.
Today Gary Rom Hairdressing boasts 10 salons. The condition of our clients’ hair remains the focal point, and no effort is spared to teach and train the teams in this regard. Gary places more emphasis and resource behind training than any other salon in South Africa. The stylists that work in the group earn top salaries, with a career path that culminates in the highest accolade, that of Artistic Director, and ultimately the opportunity to open a Gary Rom franchise, enabling them to earn a better living and lead a better life.
Many of Gary’s stylists have been with him for 12 years and more, proof that stability and attention to detail lead to longevity and brand loyalty.
